This Beautiful Life
For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by people and their stories. Even as a child my parents’ friends used to tell me their hopes, dreams, triumphs and tragedies. After turning 50, having worked in Broadcast Media and Advertising for 30 years, I decided I wanted to do something different with my life. Something that genuinely helped people and made a positive difference. But I wasn’t sure what that was.
Then in 2018 I lost my brother to bowel cancer. He was 48. A month or so before he passed away, I realised that my young children didn’t really know who my brother was. They knew he was Uncle Mike and he loved Star Wars but they didn’t know his story so I asked if he would let me interview him on camera. Sadly, as he was very unwell and quite shy, he declined.
I can’t tell you how much I wish now that I had pushed a little harder and convinced him to share his story. Because it wasn’t just him that left us. It was his laughter, his experiences, his dogged determination, his cheeky sense of humour, his regrets and his hard-earned wisdom. I did a lot of thinking in the weeks after his funeral and from that awful tragedy, the seed of This Beautiful Life germinated and started to grow.
